Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT 1) is the official name for phlebotomists in California. If you are interested in an entry-level position in health care, this job may be where you want to start. CPT 1s may work in a hospital laboratory, a freestanding laboratory where blood is drawn, a physician's office, or physician's group, in the home and in other areas. Most of the work is done in the early morning (starting at 4 or 5 AM), but some work is available around the clock.

Our phlebotomy program is approved by State of California - Health and Human Services Agency. The Department responsible for approval of Phlebotomy Programs is the CA Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services and can be contacted by clicking CDPH. Be sure to check their website, not all schools are approved by Laboratory Field Services to instruct a course for CPT 1s.

Our program consists of two courses AH 220 and AH 220AD. The first course AH 220 is taken one semester and then AH 220AD is taken immediately the following semester. If you will be unable to take the second course (AH 220AD) the next semester do not register until you are able to, take the courses in consecutive semesters.

After successful completion of AH 220 with 80% or above and then the course AH 220AD the semester directly following, you will receive a certificate from Long Beach City College.

AH 220 is a course on campus that includes the required amount of basic and advance theory the State of California requires. This campus course also includes instruction in how to perform safe phlebotomy procedures. You practice drawing blood on a mannequin arm and then on each other.

AH 220AD is the practicum course, meaning the teacher arranges for the students to practice phlebotomy procedures under the supervision of Phlebotomists and Clinical Laboratory Scientists in a laboratory setting in a local medical center. The student is required to spend at least 50 hours practicing phlebotomy and laboratory skills in the medical center.
