Assessment Test: Purpose and Content
Assessment & Orientation

Purpose: The purpose of the full assessment test is to identify the Reading, English, and Math skill levels of LBCC students so that they will enroll in the appropriate courses. 

Test Validity: If your LBCC Assessment Placements are more than two years old AND you have not enrolled into a Reading, Math, and/or English class we strongly recommend that you re-test, however we encourage you to prepare before retesting.  

FULL ASSESSMENT is a three-part test consisting of Reading, English, and Math.  The assessments are untimed but most students complete the Full Assessment in 1 1/2  to 2 1/2 hours.  

Reading
Name of the test: Accuplacer Reading Comprehension
This section of the test has multiple choice questions and is untimed. The test questions are presented in a computer adaptive mode based on your answers, with quick testing and accurate placement. Possible placements range from Reading 880 to Reading Proficiency Met for Graduation.

English 
Name of the test: Accuplacer Sentence Skills
This section of the test has multiple choice questions and is untimed. The test questions are presented in a computer adaptive mode based on your answers, with quick testing and accurate placement. Possible placements range from English 801A to English 1.

Mathematics
Name of the test: Accuplacer Computerized Math Test
This section of the test has 15-20 questions, and is untimed. The test questions are presented in a computer adaptive mode based on your answers, with quick testing and accurate placement. Possible placements range from Math 805- Math 60. Students are NOT allowed to use their own calculators for any part of the test.

NO Appointment needed! Full Assessments are administered on a walk-in basis ONLY during the hours posted in the  Assessment Schedule.  

INDIVIDUAL TESTING: Students MUST make an appointment for the Individual English or Chemistry assessments by phone, call (562) 938-4049 LAC. Please have a paper and pen available when calling to write down important information regarding the appointment. 

English Assessment:
This section involves writing an essay in response to a topic. The student has 40 minutes to complete the essay. Importance is placed on the student's usage of grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and ability to support the topic with details. 

Chemistry Asessment:  This is a 45 minute assessment and no (Scientific) calculator is allowed.  This Chemistry Assessment is a paper and pencil test that will place you in either Chemistry 1A (General Chemistry) or Chemistry 2 (Elementary Chemistry).  

Individual Reading and/or Individual Math assessments only can be completed during Full Assessment testing sessions. 

EXEMPTIONS:  You may be exempt from completing the Assessment and/or Orientation requirement, see Matriculation in College Catalog for details.  Go to Assessment Office Office to complete the appropriate form. 

RETEST POLICY:  Before retesting, we encourage students to enroll in the courses you placed into to be successful.   A student can retake all or part of the Assessment Test after five months from your test date.
