"Journalists write the first draft of history," former Washington Post
editor Phillip Graham said. As a Long Beach City College student,
you can take a major step in college journalism by enrolling in the
award-winning program that produces the Viking newspaper and
City magazine.

As a Viking or City magazine reporter, editor, photographer or artist,
you will gain first-hand experience in state-of-the-art production
techniques that will prepare you for jobs in all areas of print media.
Our graduates work at the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the
Los Angeles Times, and many other local news organizations,
magazines, and advertising/public relations firms.

The LBCC Journalism Program also prepares students for transfer. You
will learn about the important U.S. First Amendment that allows a free
press. You will gain valuable knowledge about how the First Amendment
should be used responsibly and discover the values of being accurate,
fair, balanced and neutral in your coverage.

A journalism degree or certificate from LBCC can help advance you to
a university or launch any career. It may even change your life..

JOURNALISM ACCOMPLISHMENTS, 2011-2012, PARTIAL LIST

The Viking newspaper students produced a 20-page issue, then a 16-page issue in April and May 2012, the largest number ever produced in back-to-back publications in the college's 85-year history.

The journalism program was pleased to congratulate alumna Tracy Manzer of the Long Beach Press-Telegram for winning a prestigious award for breaking news coverage from the California Newspaper Publishers Association for her work covering the mass killings at the Seal Beach salon in October 2011.

The journalism program was pleased to congratulate alumnus Tim Grobaty of the Long Beach Press-Telegram for authoring "Long Beach Chronicles." He also visited the Viking newsroom to write a story after covering an event at LBCC.

The City magazine and Viking newspaper students both earned general excellence honors from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges for state and regional competitions.

Journalism editors Danielle Williams and Maria Clara Cordeiro both earned Viking Awards from LBCC, the college's top award for students.

Journalism lab technician Jim Truitt was named as one of the Outstanding Colleagues for 2011-2012.

The number of Facebook friends on the Viking newspaper social-network approached 2,000, while the number of Twitter followers climbed past 800, led by online editors Jesus Hernandez and Alex Campbell and Viking co-editor in chief Edward Mahurien.

Viking video editor Dusty Stiggers produced an astonishing 15 videos in spring 2012, more than five times as many as previously posted in any one semester for the Viking website.

Jim Truitt welcomed hundreds of fourth-grade students to the journalism "hot spot" during the Promise Pathways tours on Fridays.

Journalism student Tyler Parker-Hawkins visited Catalina Island as part of LBCC's outreach program with other college representatives.

Alumna Grace Orozco joined Danielle Williams and Tyler Parker-Hawkins to welcome hundreds of high-school students during their "early bird" orientation on Saturdays throughout the school year.

Among many other transfer students, journalism student Michael Chhu will continue his education at one of the top University of California campuses, Jessica Burger will transfer to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Alex Campbell and Natalie Ly are heading to Cal State Long Beach and Charles Reindorf and Tyler Parker-Hawkins will transfer to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
