Patrick McKean is the student newspaper adviser, the journalism program coordinator and a journalism professor at Long Beach City College. Long Beach City College students won three top awards at the Fall 2007 Journalism Association of Community Colleges regional conference: general excellence for the Viking Web site, lbccvikingnews.com, the Viking print edition and City magazine. He has advised the Viking newspaper for 20years after working as a reporter, copy editor, city editor, news editor and managing editor at professional newspapers for 12 years. His freelance column is published occasionally in the Beach Week section of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, and he has continued his journalism work in the field through special projects at the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register and the Press-Telegram. He has covered special events attended by Presidents Clinton and Reagan and also written about the birth of donkeys and edited food pages.
McKean has served as state and Southern California president of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges. At Long Beach City College, he represented 1,000 teachers during the college district’s successful campaign for a $176 million bond measure in 2002. During his sabbatical leave in 2001-02, he updated the college’s history book covering the years 1987-2002.
