Born and raised in New York, Tony Gargano attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy and earned an A.A. in Liberal Arts. From there, he came to California to attend CSULB where he received his B.A. and M.A. in English. He has always been interested in literature, and teaching soon became his passion.
Tony Gargano has taught at CSULB, Cypress College, Cerritos College, Orange Coast College, Brooks College, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and Crenshaw High School. He also tutored for many years at various schools and taught part-time at LBCC for 12 years. Currently, he is working on several articles dealing with lessons in composition.
As Chair of the English Majors and Minors at LBCC, Tony Gargano is elated that the group has attained Club status on campus. This is a very important step in serving all of LBCC's students who are interested in literature, reading, and writing. Tony Gargano also serves on the Composition and Jacaranda Committees. A few years ago, he received one of the five nationwide awards from the Harper-Collins Fellowship Foundation.
Tony Gargano explains, "Teaching means to learn again. And as I learn every semester from my students, I believe my job is to make myself obsolete. My students leave the class with a newly found sense that they can write because they have been empowered with critical thinking skills and writing strategies."
