Journalism Department Honored

The LBCC journalism program coordinated by Patrick McKean has gained general excellence honors for the Viking newspaper and City magazine and nine individual awards during competition April 8-9 in Sacramento.

The Journalism Association of Community Colleges also honored nine LBCC Journalism students for individual awards at the event and seven students earned honorable mention for mail-in awards.

LBCC's journalism students earned 20 major awards against university level competition this semester. The California College Media Association recognized the students. Viking journalist Veronica Vega earned a trip to New York City and a scholarship from the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

City Magazine is advised by Cindy Frye, Suzanne Mapes and Evan Ballinger while Jim Truitt co-advises the Viking with McKean.

In addition, Viking newspaper graduate and former LBCC alumni director Jillian Sederholm has been accepted into the graduate school at New York's prestigious Columbia School of Journalism.
