Design Thinking at LBCC
Institutional Effectiveness

In a time of growing concern for the quality of education in California, Long Beach City College has started an effort to make its core processes more efficient internally and more supportive of its students' needs. The strategy that has been adopted for this encompassing effort is a combination of Business Process Review and Design Thinking. Business Process Review focuses on the internal aspects of the college's processes and functions aiming to reduce the number of steps in a process and to increase efficiency. Design Thinking focuses on the students' viewpoints and on their ability to understand and navigate the college processes that help them succeed. The aim of Design Thinking is to feed an understanding of the students' experience and situation into the redesign to make the resulting processes responsive to the needs of students.

The following reports document the planning, discovery, and design phases of Design Thinking focused on Student Financial Preparedness at Long Beach City College during Fall 2015 and Winter 2016.

Design Thinking Planning Phase Report
This document reports on the first phase of Design Thinking as applied to the topic of student's financial preparedness at LBCC.

Design Thinking Discovery Phase Report
The purpose of this report is to give an overview of the work done in the Discovery Phase of the Design Thinking project on student financial preparedness.
