What is the SANKOFA Scholars Learning Community?
The SANKOFA Scholars Learning Community seeks to engage you as a student in the process of writing from basic skills to college-level composition. You may apply to Learning Community if you meet the eligibility requirements for English 801A, 801B, 105 or 1 through the LBCC English assessment test or completion of the appropriate English course prerequisite. Through hard work and dedication, you will develop a greater sense of confidence in your writing skills and be highly capable of completing writing assignments throughout your college career. More importantly, you will complete the college-level writing requirement and be able to transfer to a 4-year university or earn an Associate Degree in a timely manner.
The Counseling 1 and 49 classes will help you adjust to college life and meet the expectations of your professors. You are not just attending college as a student; you are a scholar who can succeed academically, on every level. Counseling 7 will support you in developing your life’s vision. Through self-exploration and examination of your personal beliefs and core values, you will have the foundation for reaching your highest potential.
As part of the SANKOFA Scholars Learning Community, you are required to participate in tutoring, academic/career counseling, and supplemental activities. You will be exposed to the works of notable African-American authors and artists. All cultural and supplemental activities will highlight outstanding contributions of African-Americans throughout the course of history. The supplemental activities will enhance your personal, social, and professional development. In addition, you will be aided in applying for LBCC scholarships, university summer programs, and cooperate/government internships.
