What is the SANKOFA Scholars Program?

The SANKOFA Scholars Program is an Umoja-affliated program. Umoja is a leadership team and steering committee that is recognized by the Board of Governors, statewide Academic Senate, and Student Senate of California Community Colleges. A Memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Umoja Community and Long Beach City College is in effect from August 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

In line with the Umoja mission statement, the SANKOFA Scholars Program at Long Beach City College is committed to the academic success, personal growth, and self-actualization of African-American students. As teamwork and mutual respect are core values of SANKOFA, the program is open to all interested LBCC students.

The SANKOFA Scholars Program consists of two components:

  • The SANKOFA Scholars Learning Community, and
  • The SANKOFA Scholars' Association.

What does "SANKOFA" mean?

Visually, "Sankofa" is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. Symbolically, "Sankofa" means to reach back and gather the best of what our past has taught us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward.
