The Applied Program provides music majors with private lessons (through audition only, see Auditions page) on a keyboard instrument, voice, guitar, or any standard band or orchestra instrument. Each student is required to perform twice per semester before the applied program master class, and stand for a jury before the faculty at the end of each semester. Sophomore recitals are available and encouraged to those who reach Sophomore standing in their jury exam. Due to the high cost of private instruction at the college level, there are a limited number of department funded spots available in the program.
For those intending to declare as Music Majors, the AA Music Degree outlines the minimum requirements for a transferring music major. Upon successful entrance to the applied program, you are considered a music major by the department, and are required to complete the following program course requirements for every semester enrolled in the Applied Program course (Music 92AD):
- *Music Theory Sequence (Music 6, 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B) until complete
- *Musicianship Sequence (Music 5AD, 9AD, 10AD, 16AD) until complete
- *Three semesters of Class Piano (51A, 51B, 51C; piano majors exempt)
- One large day ensemble: Concert Choir (Music 11AD), Wind Ensemble (Music 46AD), Chamber Orchestra (Music 13AD)
*It is possible to test out of any courses in the theory, musicianship, and piano sequences through a placement exam. Please see the Theory and Piano pages for details.
