Professor - Dr. Jacqeuline Petitto

Music Majors:

If you are a serious pianist looking to transfer to a four-year college or university, LBCC offers you all the classes that you would encounter at a four-year institution. Applied lessons (one-on-one lessons) are a part of this curriculum and are designed to prepare you for your entrance audition. The student participates in a weekly performance class, and acceptance to this program is by audition. Auditions usually take place the first Friday of classes of the semester as well as during performance juries at the end of the semester. Students who wish to be considered for this program need to prepare two contrasting pieces (from two differing musical styles), preferably to be played from memory. They will also be asked to play a variety of scales and arpeggios. As Dr. Petitto has a limited number of spaces in her teaching studio at LBCC, priority is always given to returning students.

Music Majors who are not pianists:

Long Beach City College offers a class piano track that helps music majors who are not pianists prepare to pass a piano proficiency exam at a four-year program. This track consists of Beginning Piano 1 and 2, (MUS51A and 51B in the catalog) and Intermediate Piano 1 (MUS51C in the catalog).

Non-Music Majors:

All of the Keyboard classes at Long Beach City College are open to whoever would like to take them. They are not exclusively for music majors. They are designed, however, with the music major in mind. If you have ever thought you’d like to learn to play the piano, class piano is a good place to start.
