Greg Yanagihara has been teaching geology at LBCC since 2001. He works full-time for Earth Tech in downtown Long Beach as a consulting geologist. At Earth Tech, Greg works at various sites determining the nature and extent of groundwater contamination and evaluates clean-up solutions for those sites. Greg received his Bachelors degree in geology at the UC Santa Barbara and his Masters degree at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). After obtaining his Masters degree, he worked for the Department of Energy at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory before moving on Earth Tech.

From early in childhood, Greg has enjoyed playing in the outdoors and one of the primary reasons that drew him into a career in geology was the fact that geologists spend a lot of time outdoors. Greg's favorite outdoor activities include mountain biking, scuba diving, whitewater kayaking, skiing, and hiking, but his two greatest passions are mountaineering and foreign travel. When travelling abroad, Greg prefers to go off the beaten path and notable journeys have included celebrating Haiti's Voudou Festival, participating in cow day care in Moldova, and diving in the atolls of the Marshall Islands. For the past ten years, he has combined travelling and climbing by participating in climbing expeditions throughout the world. Notable ascents include Mt. McKinley, U.S.A.; Huascaran, Peru; Aconcagua, Argentina; Mt. Ararat, Turkey; Mt. Kenya, Kenya; Kilimanjaro, Tanzania; and Cho Oyu, Tibet/Nepal. To spice up his classes, Greg has combined his photographs and experiences with his geology curriculum.
