The Sabbatical Leave Committee developed the following points as a basis for its evaluation of sabbatical leave proposals:
- The project must
- benefit the institution and/or
- contribute to the professional development of the faculty member
- The project must be related to a community college, college, or university discipline.
- The faculty member must have the skills, background, or training needed to undertake the project. The concern here is that a worthwhile project may be too large in scope to be adequately undertaken by any single person. In short, some projects may require a panel or committee approach to be completed adequately.
- The sabbatical project should be for work above and beyond that normally expected of faculty in their usual efforts to keep current in their field(s).
- The project should have as one of its goals a clear product presented in such a format that it may be shared with interested faculty and staff. (Such forms may include lecture, presentation, demonstration, book, article, bibliography, compact disc, Web site, and so on.)
- The sabbatical leave applicant should be able to provide an affirmative answer to the following question regarding the project: Would faculty members in similar positions in other colleges feel comfortable in approving the applicant's request for a sabbatical?
