Welcome
Department of Speech Communication and Sign Language

 Mission Statement

Speech Communication faculty firmly believe that experiential learning is the most effective means of achieving the lessons of human communication and are dedicated to insuring that students enter the world better prepared to meet future communication challenges and opportunities.

 Policy on Free Expression

It is the policy of the Speech Communication Department at Long Beach City College to encourage responsible free expression of ideas within the classroom environment. While students and faculty have the right to express their viewpoints, they should do so in such a way as to respect the rights of those with whom they are communicating. Student and faculty alike are responsible for maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment that is free of prejudice and harassment.

 Speech Communication Classes

In our Public Speaking, Leadership and Small Group Discussion classes, students develop skills that will promote their success both in future classes and in the world beyond formal education. Courses in Argumentation and Debate teach the important lessons of critical thinking and the fundamentals of effective persuasion. Our Oral Interpretation of Literature courses cover sharing literature through the art of speech. Elements of Interpersonal Communication offer students the essential skills of both building and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Finally, Intercultural Communication allows students to develop their full potential as effective communicators in our rapidly changing multicultural society.
