How to Run an Effective Campaign
Office of Student Life

Running for office takes a lot of courage.  You put yourself out in front of your peers and make yourself vulnerable in a very public way.  I commend you for your courage and for being willing to embark on this journey.

Serving in an elective office is a high honor and a position of trust.  Any elective position has important responsibilities which should be treated with respect and taken seriously.  I commend each of you for your desire to serve.

Winning an election is the result of hard work, good planning and, usually, a little luck.  The way you conduct your campaign will have lasting effects on you win or lose.

Here are my tips for conducting and effective – hopefully successful – campaign of which you can be proud, win or lose.

  1. Be memorable – have a good slogan.
  2. Be visible – stand out, get noticed.
  3. Be the leader of a good team – you cannot do this alone.
  4. Be there early – don’t let a minute go to waste!
  5. Be there late – keep working until voting is done!
  6. Be direct – ASK FOR PEOPLE’S VOTE!
  7. Be serious – stand for something; have a platform.
  8. Be brief – people can only remember a few things!
  9. Be respectful – keep to the high road – always!
  10. Be true to you – Have integrity – win or lose.
