Student Success Award Recipients Announced!

LBCC's 2011 Student Success award winners were announced Friday, January 7, 2011 at the State of the College event. The recipients are Matt Lawrence (Faculty) from the Social Sciences and Ericka Gutierrez (Staff) from Business Administration.
Nomination for Matt Lawrence:
To whom it may concern,
To whom it may concern, I would like to nominate Dr. Matthew Lawrence for the student success award. I cannot imagine where I would be without his help. After taking a significant time off from school, I enrolled in Dr. Lawrence's class at LBCC. He spoke enthusiastically about philosophy and higher education. He was very organized, approachable, and accessible. During that first semester in his class, he took notice of my work and saw potential in me that I did not see. He got me to apply for the honors program and for the President Ambassadors program (he even interrupted his lunch to take me to the President Ambassadors orientation). I completed the honors program, and I have been an ambassador for the past three semesters; from this many other opportunities have come my way. I got involved in AGS, and Leader's Across Campus, and I have been encouraged to join ASB. I even met a person (a fellow ambassador) who helped me get financial aid, enabling me to stay in school. The bottom line is that Dr. Lawrence has changed my life. Nobody else has left such an impression on me. He has inspired me to stay in school, to enjoy my work, and to give back to others. He is the best, and I wish he taught more classes just so I can take them. Pick him.
Sincerely,
Veronica Lepez
Nomination for Erica Gutierrez:
We, the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) at Long Beach City College and the Coalition for Latino Advancement would like to nominate Ericka Gutierrez from the Business Administration Department as the person who has helped us the most. She has been a key person for our success by leading us the way. When MAES was created, we did not know how to start or how to manage the club. Ericka came at the right time. She talked to each member and showed each one their strengths and weaknesses. She then showed each one how to make good use of our strengths and how to improve in our weaknesses. She has guided us to an easier college life and makes college that much easier for us to have a successful college experience. She takes her own free time to help us when in need and is not hesitant to do so. She has opened a lot of opportunities for us and has demonstrated more each time her determination toward the program and us. We nominate Ericka Gutierrez because she can assimilate to the students and proves to understand our academic goals. She has taught us since how to put together an agenda to how to plan an event. She has shared with us all her knowledge and her experience as a student. She understands our needs and our struggles and she gives us tips to overcome all of them. Ericka has been our guide, our support and our motivation to continue searching for the growth of our club as well as our own personal growth. She definitely deserves a recognition for her hard work.
Sincerely,
Long Beach City College MAES and Coalition for Latina Advancement
