Honors Program and Courses

For over sixty-five years, Long Beach City College has established innovative educational programs to serve the public. In 1980, the college established the Honors Program to better serve high-ability, high-achieving students. Today, the program is an important element of the college's curriculum, and its graduates have proven records of success in professional and graduate schools, as well as at the baccalaureate level.

Major benefits of the program include Outstanding Scholar Awards, transfer programs, President's Scholar Honors and Academic Senate honors courses and the Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar.

Rotary Club Honors

Each year Rotary Club Honors Scholarships are available to entering Long Beach City College students who graduate from area high schools. Awarded on the basis of a student's academic record and potential, these scholarships require students to have met the "a through f" subject requirements for entry into the University of California with a GPA of 3.5 or better (correspondingly high scores on the SAT or ACT are also necessary).

In addition, the Long Beach City College Foundation awards $150 scholarships to all graduates of Long Beach high schools who have a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average and who enroll at Long Beach City College.

Transfer Programs

The LBCC Honors Program is a member of the UCLA, UCI, UCR, UCSC, USC, CSUDH, Chapman University, Pepperdine and Pomona College Transfer Programs and can offer its graduates "guaranteed priority admission" to these univer-sities for the baccalaureate. For further details about these and developing alliances, contact the Honors Program Office at (562)938-4354.

President's Scholar Honors

The President's Scholar designation with associate degrees is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in the college's Honors Program.

I. To qualify, a student must complete a minimum of six honors courses or Honors Interdisciplinary seminars with a 3.5 or higher GPA. (Minimum units required: 15).*

In addition, a student must maintain a Long Beach City College cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least 80% of all units attempted in courses numbered 1-99.* A student must also satisfy the college's "units in residency" requirement.

*NOTE: Exceptions to the total number of units required and to the 80% rule may be made at the discretion of the Honors Program Committee.

II. The President's Scholar designation is entered on the transcript, next to the associate degree notation. In addition, qualifying students receive a gold seal on their diplomas and are given special recognition at commencement. President's Scholars are the first to receive their diplomas and are awarded medallions which they wear at graduation.

III. As part of the President's Scholar award, students customarily receive a cash scholarship at graduation.

Honors Courses

General education honors courses have as few as ten students and offer more intensive study than is normally possible. Over the years, Anatomy 1, Anthropology 2, Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, Biology 20, Biology 41, Economics 1A, English 1, English 3, English 44, English 45, English 48, Geology 1, Geology 3, German 3, German 4, History 1A, History 1B, History 2C, History 8A, History 8B, Humanities 1, Interdisciplinary Seminar 1A, Inter-disciplinary Seminar 1B, Interdisciplinary Semi-nar 1C, Interdisciplinary Seminar 1D, Math 37, Music 40, Philosophy 6, Political Science 1, Psychology 1, Social Science 1 and Statistics 1 have been offered as honors courses.

In addition, honors courses sometimes offer an extensive approach to knowledge by consider-ing the interconnections between disciplines and fields of knowledge. Guest speakers and field trips enhance this approach. Other extensive possibilities are available because many honors classes are scheduled with instructors from different disciplines working together to encourage stu-dents to explore multidisciplinary concerns as they fulfill the general education requirement.

Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar

The Honors Interdisciplinary Seminar is a one-unit elective course that replaces the Honors Option projects of the past. To be eligible for this new opportunity, a student must have taken or be taking one of several UC General Education Core courses that serve as prerequisites for the seminar. If you have not taken one of the prerequisite classes, you may enroll in the seminar only if you take one of the courses at the same time. The seminar will count as one of the six courses you need to take to secure your Transfer Priority Guarantee. However, you can take only two such seminars toward completion of the transfer guarantee. Students select an aspect of the seminar analysis presented in class and complete a research paper with performance in class determined by the quality of that paper. Each instructor will be available to help guide you through your project.

One seminar will analyze Charles Darwin's Origin of Species. To be eligible, a student must have taken a biology and/or philosophy class. Another seminar on aggression and violence in Post-World War II United States history is also available. To be eligible, a student must have taken a United States history, psychology and/or History of the Americas class. A third seminar will focus on the fundamental issues facing humanity in the modern era, seeking to explain the consequences of the collapse of traditional beliefs after the Scientific Revolution (1543-1687). To be eligible, a student must have taken a U.S. history or philosophy course. You must also qualify for the Honors Program. A fourth seminar analyzes the Columbian Revolution from its European origins to its impact on the Americas. Includes history and the library sciences. To be eligible, a student must have taken a history class.
