Welcome to Long Beach City College Culinary Arts Department!

What is Culinary Arts?

Culinary Arts is the art of cooking. A culinarian is a person working in the Culinary Arts. If you have desire, discipline, and a passion for food and creating food for others, then this culinary training will be the place for you! Evolving into a professional culinarian is a lifelong profession. It is challenging and demanding.

What training and education will I receive at Long Beach City College?

The Culinary Arts program prepares future culinarians by offering courses to students desiring personal enrichment, enhancing skills, and providing degrees for professional chefs and cooks currently in the food service industry. This program provides students with intensive professional and practical experience and a hands-on approach to the daily operation of a professional kitchen. The courses focus on Safety & Sanitation in the kitchen, food preparation and production, menu planning, skill development, and problem solving in a culinary environment.

Long Beach City College offers courses for students pursuing a Culinary or Baking Associate in Science Degree, Certificate of Achievement, or a Certificate of Accomplishment.

For ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE: 
The Associate Degree is a two-year college degree awarded by Long Beach City College which includes general education courses and a major.

For CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT: 
This certificate is a one to two year program in occupational/technical areas at Long Beach City College which provides training in job skills and employment opportunities. Complete the required units with a minimum grade of "C" in each course.

For CERTIFICATE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT: 
This certificate certifies a competency in a given area and requires less than 18 units. Complete the required units at Long Beach City College with a minimum grade of "C" in each course.

Does the program offer work experience?

Trained culinarians are continually needed in the hospitality industry. Employment opportunities in the foodservice industry are growing and remain strong. Work experience classes involve supervised training in restaurants, hotels, country clubs, supermarkets, fast food facilities, bakeries, and hospitals.
