Welcome to Leaders Across Campus, a peer-mentor program where students help students succeed.
Founded in spring of 1995 by the Counseling and Student Development department under the guidance of counselor Darlene Gicuhi, Leaders Across Campus is a unique opportunity for students to represent the spirit of Long Beach City College as they embark on a very rewarding and challenging endeavor. The program consists of Mentors and Mentees who work together to ease transitions, to be academic friends, and to be successful in their efforts; a reciprocal relationship of sharing and learning is achieved. Students are matched for one semester, during the fall or the spring, when they meet for one hour each week at a time that is convenient for them. Many students continue to be involved in the program over several semesters.
The mentoring goals are to facilitate the academic and affective development of Mentees by:
- encouraging, supporting and providing friendship
- personalizing the academic environment
- exploring campus resources
- strengthening college survival skills and self-efficacy
- role-modeling academic excellence
- providing peer and academic support
Our motto of "Who We Are Makes a Difference" truly becomes apparent as Mentors bring to the program a genuine heart of service, wanting to help other students find their way at Long Beach City College.
