Special Announcements

  1. Why do we need to build the parking structure?

The goal is to add additional parking spaces and to locate parking close to classrooms to minimize the impact on the surrounding residential area.

  2. How long will it take to complete the structure?

Parking structure is estimated to be completed fall 2011.

  3. How much will this cost and how is it being paid for?

The projects estimated budget is $18.8 million using the Bond 2008 Measure E funds.

  4. With our budget situation in trouble, why are we spending money doing this now?

Funds are available from the recently passed Measure E Bond program and can only be used to construct new facilities.

  5. Are we building a parking structure at PCC too? If no, why not?

At this time we will not be undertaking the construction of a parking structure at PCC due to ample parking availability.

  6. How will the structure impact our students with disabilities?

The entire structure is fully accessible.

  7. How will student parking be impacted during construction? What will be done to make up for the lost parking spots?

There are an additional 1000 parking spaces available at Veterans Stadium parking lot and additional shuttle buses will transport students around the LAC campus.

  8. What kinds of noise and air pollution will this cause in our learning environments?

An EIR study was done by The Chambers Group to ensure there are no significant environmental impacts.

  9. How many new spots will this structure provide for our students?

The new parking structure will bring us a total of 900 parking stalls, a net gain of nearly 300 parking locations.

  10. What kind of security or safety measures are in place to minimize accidents during construction?

The site will be fenced off, along with an aggressive construction impact notice campaign, which will ensure safety. Also a communication team is in place to inform the staff, faculty and students of the parking structure construction kick-off.

  11. What is being done to make this parking structure as green as possible?

The roof will have solar panels that will provide an estimated 451 kilowatts of power. A touch screen information monitor will be installed on the adjacent campus parkway to show the energy levels being produced by the solar panels. Sustainable building materials will be used throughout the structure and more than 50% of the construction debris will be recycled.

  12. What kind of security measures will be in effect for students and their vehicles once this structure is constructed?

Long Beach City College Police units and Parking Control Staff will patrol the structure at regular intervals. The building was designed with optimum visibility throughout with heavy lighting. The fire protection system, including emergency and fire alarm pull stations and fire standpipes placed throughout the structure will be installed per code. The smoke and fire detection system will also be installed and linked to a central monitoring station.

  13. What is being done to get students to the North Campus?

Two new shuttles are planned to be added to the current LAC loop set to arrive at 15-20 minute intervals. It is anticipated, that the two additional shuttles will initially traverse between stops at LAC Monday through Thursday from 7:30am until 10:30pm and on Fridays 7:30am until 1:00pm. The schedules will be adjusted based on demand after implementation.

  14. Who can ride the shuttle buses?

All riders must have current student/staff identification for access.
