Suggested items to bring to make your trip more enjoyable:

  • U.S. dollars in small denominations for use in Cambodia

Others:

  • You will need a valid passport with at least a six-month validity
  • One 2x3 photo for your Cambodian Visa
  • Approx. $400 for food
  • $20 for your Cambodian Visa
  • You may consider the following vaccinations:  Hepatitis A & B;  Anti-Malarial drugs
  • It will be hot and humid in both countries. Very hot and very humid!
  • Dress modestly or else you may be prevented from entry into temples. No tank tops, spaghetti straps or short shorts.

Itinerary-at-a-glance
 

May 27: Fly from John Waye Airport (SNA) to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

May 29: Arrive in Phnom Penh.

May 30: Visit National Museum, Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.

May 31: Visit Genocide Museum  (S-21), Killing Fields, and Wat Phnom.

June 1: Drive to Kep. On the way, visit Anmgor Borei and Tonle Bati

June 2: Take a bout trip to Rabbit Island.

June 3: Tour Kep and Kampot. Afternoon boat cruise along the river to visit Teok Chhu waterfall and go swimming.

June 4: Free time in Kep.  Snorkeling, fishing and a visit to a local island are all options.

June 5: Drive back to Phnom Penh. Rest of the day is free time to explore city.

June 6: Drive to Battambang. Visit Phiphethearm Temple and participate in meditation and lessons in Buddhism.

June 7: Visit the Killing Caves of Phnom Sampov and local wats.  Afternoon ride on Bamboo Train.

June 8:  Visit orphanage in Battambang. Rest of the day is free time to explore city.

June 9:  Visit local temples in Battambang to help students learn English.

June 10:  Drive to Siem Reap. Free time once we arrive.

June 11:  Tour Angkor Wat Temples (Angkor Thom, Bayon, Baphoun, Elephant Terrances, Leper King Terrace, and Royal Palace, Angkor Wat). In the evening, climb to the top of Phnom Bakheng to watch the sunset.

June 14:  Visit Tonle Sap lake, where local people live on floating houses. In the afternoon, visit Les Artisan D’Angkor School/workshop to learn about traditional Cambodian arts and crafts.

June 15:  Visit the waterfall in theforest outside of Siem Reap. Swimming and picnic lunch.

June 16:  Fly to Bangkok, Thailand. Evening Thai dinner and cultural show.

June 17:  Visit Wat Po (with its famous reclining Buddha), Royal Grand Palace, Marble Temple and other wats.

June 18:  Visit the famous floating market in countryside outside of Bangkok. In the afternoon, visit Nakor Pathom, the first religious landmark that signified the influx of Buddhism into Thailand.

June 19: Free time in Bangkok.

June 20: Fly to Singapore.  Free time in Singapore.

June 21: Fly home to Los Angeles.

Courses Offered

Philosophy 6: Introduction to Philosophy
Grading:  letter grade or credit/no credit.  Transferable to UC/CSU. 
This class explores the enduring questions of philosophy in the areas of knowledge, religion, science, logic, value and metaphysics.

OR

Philosophy 8:  Introduction to Non-Western Philosophy
Grading:  letter grade or credit/no credit.  Transferable to UC/CSU. 
An introduction to some of the philosophical traditions from around the world. Themes include the meaning of life, spirituality, the role of the individual and society, the nature of reality, and the effects of history and culture on belief systems.

Prof. Debbie Whittaker
Professor Debbie Whittaker has an M.A. in philosophy, a B.A. in political science, and has been a full-time instructor at Long Beach City College since 2005. She specializes in eastern philosophy and has traveled to Asia many times. She successfully led a Study Abroad group from LBCC to Cambodia and Thailand in summer 2008. She is a lifelong resident of Long Beach, California.
