C.C. Sadler
Online Learning and Educational Technology

C.C. Sadler is one of the many Long Beach City Colle staff and faculty that are proud to call themselves Viking Alumni. On July 1, 2019, C.C. became the President of LBCC’s Classified Senate. While being appointed Classified Senate President is certainly a professional achievement for Sadler, it also marks a significant personal accomplishment. Several years ago, Sadler, along with some of her colleagues at LBCC, realized the college had a void in the representation of its classified employees. “We realized that we had fallen behind.

Jean-Bernard Durand
Cardiologist, Researcher, & Professor

LBCC alumnus (1980) and Hall of Fame (2001) member, Jean-Bernard Durand, MD, is an associate professor in the Department of Cardiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Durand graduated from LBCC with an Associate of Arts degree in 1980. During his time at LBCC, he received the LBCC Outstanding Student Award, the Outstanding Scholar Award and won first place in the National French Competition.


Jim Choura
Philanthropy, Hospitality

Jim Choura has lived in Long Beach all of his life.  He attended Lakewood High before attending LBCC from 66-69, transferring to CSULB to study economics. “LBCC was the institution of my generation.”  This LBCC Hall of Famer (2012) has always worked hard in his profession and found ways to make our community a better place.

Samantha Oboro
Class of 2020 - AS Biological Sciences

We are back again to highlight Viking Alumni in our community and around the world to see how Vikings are doing amidst the global pandemic. We had the pleasure of sharing some time via Zoom with recent alumni, Samantha Oboro. She earned an AS in Biological Sciences at LBCC in 2020 and now is pursuing a nursing degree from CSU Long Beach. It is our pleasure to introduce you to this extraordinarily kind and insightful person.

Angel Garcia

Meet award-winning poet Ángel García. Ángel began his journey as a student at Millikan High School. At Millikan, Ángel was a part of the Upward Bound program. He wasn’t ready for a four-year university, but he knew that he wanted to continue with his education, so he enrolled at Long Beach City College. As he began his career at LBCC, Ángel continued to participate in the Upward Bound program and found his passion in the many service opportunities that the College had to offer. He continued to tutor students in Upward Bound and as a part of Project Launch.

Max Evans

This month we had a chance to sit down with Max Evans, a local author and, of course, a Viking alumnus. Max is currently a full-time English Professor at LA Southwest College.

Max grew up in the Wrigley neighborhood of Long Beach, graduating from Saint Anthony’s High School before attending LBCC and transferring to Long Beach State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and an MFA in Creative Writing.

Charles and Kisha Singleton have the kinds of success stories we all love to hear about. Both are Long Beach natives, with Charles coming to Long Beach City College from Poly High School and Kisha from Lakewood High School. Both are self-made, having worked hard to earn the success they enjoy in life. Both are generous, diligently giving back to their community. Both are Vikings.


Tim Heffern, Roger Isaslazo, and Mayra Aguilar

The Fall semester is officially underway, so we wanted to take the time to sit down with three alumni that help make the incredible instruction on both of our campuses possible: Tim Heffern, Deputy Director of Academic Computing & Multimedia Services; Roger Isaslazo, Interim Technology Services Manager; and Mayra Aguilar, Project Manager for Educational and Multimedia Technologies.

Class of 2019 - Electrical Engineer

We continue to highlight Viking Alumni in our community and around the world to see how Vikings are doing amidst the global pandemic. We had the pleasure of sharing some time via Zoom with recent alumni, Tomas Trevino. He is in his second year of apprenticeship for electrical engineering and specializes in work with hazards/low voltage electrical systems (servers, oil fields, etc.) and even wiring – which he claims he learned much of during his time at LBCC.

Stephaun McKinley
Master Sergeant in the US Air Force

We’re highlighting Viking Alumni in our community and around the world to see how Vikings are handling the pandemic. Today, we’re sitting down again with Master Sergeant Stephaun McKinley, USAF, who played football and studied Psychology at LBCC in 2007-2008. Last time we spoke, Staff Sergeant McKinley was working to develop a RAVENS program in Germany, offering flyaway security for military aircraft.

Bob & Barbara Ellis
Lifelong teachers and community members

Bob & Barbara Ellis have dedicated a total of 73 years of their lives to teaching the next generation. Now, with a $1.4 million bequest to create a scholarship endowment for credential students at California State University Long Beach (CSULB), Bob & Barbara are helping future educators shape the lives of California’s children. 

After graduating from CSULB in 1964, Barbara went on to teach English for 22 years at Hughes Middle School & 14 years at Lakewood High School. 


Col. Charles H. Pierce

Col. Charles H. Pierce, Viking alumnus and decorated pilot, learned to fly at LBCC in the late 1930s as part of the Civilian Pilot Training Program unveiled by President Roosevelt in the years leading up to World War II. The program’s aim was to train 20,000 college students as pilots each year in preparation for the coming war.

Shannon McHale and Steven Phillips
Alumni Couple!

In 1972, students Shannon McHale from Malibu and Steven Phillips from Long Beach would meet and subsequently end up spending many years happily married.  Shannon joined the Ramayana sorority and Steven became a member of the Vidar fraternity.  They first met on October 5, 1972 at the sorority kidnap night. They had their first date two days later at the “Joint Presents” where all the girls who made it into the sororities were presented in the LBCC cafeteria.

Bruce Fraser
Assistant Coach for the Golden State Warriors

Bruce Fraser, who played basketball for LBCC, is now an assistant coach for player development with the Golden State Warriors under head coach, Steve Kerr. He regularly works one-on-one with player Stephen Curry. In addition, Bruce shares advance scouting duties with the four other assistants, helping prepare the Warriors for upcoming opponents.

Tammy Trujillo
Broadcaster, Author & Professor

LBCC Hall of Fame alumni, Tammy Trujillo, continues to work to bridge the entertainment industry and education. She has been an award-winning broadcaster in Southern California for more than 30 years. She is also a full-time Professor of Broadcasting at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut and a full-time broadcast professional, heard locally on 89.3. She also provides news on stations throughout the country as well as online through Wochit, one of the top ten internet content providers in the world.

James Benton (Ben) Souders
Fire Chief

In November of 2017, we lost a great Viking warrior alum, James Ben Souders who passed away at age 86 after a long illness.  “Benny” was born in El Dorado, Kansas in 1931 and moved to Long Beach with his family in 1940.  Ben grew up in Long Beach, and after graduating from Long Beach Poly in 1949, he went on to play baseball for Joe Hicks at Long Beach City College.  After LBCC he attended Fresno State University, where he continued to play baseball and was an outstanding pitcher, graduating in 1953.  After college, he became an elite softball player for the Long Beach N

Carleen Booth Armstrong
Longstanding community member

Carleen Booth Armstrong’s family is an LBCC family that stretches back four generations. Carleen’s father graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and then attended LBCC before going on to Stanford University, where he received his law degree. Her mother graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1930 and attended LBCC before going to USC. Her parents met at LBCC.
