Long Beach City College celebrated numerous athletic successes this year

LBCC has a rich and tremendous athletic legacy and every year at the end of the athletic seasons, four Long Beach City College student-athletes are honored for their achievements on the playing field, as well as in the classroom. This year’s student-athletes exemplified success both on and off the field. LBCC recognized Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Matthew Pennala from our Men’s Volleyball program. Matt led the men’s volleyball program to the state championship game and plans to attend Cal State Long Beach in the fall to continue his degree.

Long Beach City College student-athletes are impressive! They balance rigorous academic courses with volunteering, jobs, internships, and oftentimes familial responsibilities all on top of a disciplined athletic schedule. One of the pillars of LBCC Athletics is to build Champions of Character, our goal is to adequately equip each student-athlete with the experiences to help them learn lessons and skills to help them through everyday life and navigate their future.

LBCC Athletics Partners with Special Olympics Southern California

Long Beach City College Athletics is proud of its history of excellence. Collectively, the Vikings hold 16 National Championships, a state-record 93 California Community College State Championships, hundreds of conference titles, and over 20 Football Bowl Game appearances. As a significant milestone of the LBCC Facilities Master Plan, the Outdoor Kinesiology Labs encompassed the construction of Building W – Aquatic Center.

Kids at Summer Swim Program 2022 at the KLAC

Earl B. & Loraine Miller Foundation Grant Funds Summer Swim Program

For more than twenty years, the Long Beach City College Athletic Department has hosted a Summer Recreation Swim Program that provides support to the Long Beach community with an emphasis on the health and well-being of children in need. To support this program, the LBCC Foundation and LBCC Athletics are offering 100 scholarships for at-risk and underserved youth funded by the Earl B. & Loraine Miller Foundation in July/August of 2022.

The Monte Nitzkowski Endowment
Honoring a LBCC legend

Monte Nitzkowski was head coach of the water polo and swimming programs from 1954-89. He led the Vikings to six state water polo championships and was selected five times to the U.S. Olympic coaching staff, serving as head coach in 1972, 1980, and 1984. He coached five Vikings into the Olympics and trained six state swimming champions.
