Nursing Application Requirements
When applying to any of the nursing programs at Long Beach City College, it is important to understand the academic requirements needed to enter the programs. Please refer to the following requirements before submitting your application and associated documentation.
ADN Application Requirements
Prerequisites
English 1
Completed at LBCC with a passing grade or successful completion of a college English course at the level of English 1 from another college. To determine which level of English is required, please see a Counselor.
Sciences
The following courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher before admittance to the program:
- ANATOMY 1, Human Anatomy
- PHYSIOLOGY 1, Human Physiology
- BIOLOGY 2, General Microbiology
Life Science courses must have a combined GPA of 2.5 or higher and be completed within five (5) years prior to the application deadline. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by LBCC). If you would like to have your courses evaluated, please submit the Life Science Equivalency Form with your application.
Proficiencies
For more information, please refer to the graduation proficiency requirements section under Plan A of the General Education Plan or see a Counselor.
READING
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- Completion of the Guided Placement Tool with the result of Proficiency Met. The Guided Placement Tool can be found on the Viking Student System.
- Completion of a Critical Thinking course which meets Area A3 on Plan B (the CSU GE-Breadth plan).
- Completion of READ 82, 83, or 84 (or equivalent from other colleges)
- Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
MATH
Successful completion with a grade of “C” or higher in a college math course at the level of Mathematics 1300, 130A or higher. The following information must also be included with your application:
- HIGH SCHOOL/GED: Students without an Associate Degree or higher are required to submit proof of High School or equivalent completion.
- OVERALL/CUMULATIVE GPA: must be 2.5 or higher; based on all grades from all colleges attended. Attach an unofficial transcript of LBCC courses completed and an official, sealed transcript from all colleges other than LBCC.
- INFORMATION MEETING: Attendance is strongly recommended. Meetings are held on the posted dates. Check the website for current dates, times, and locations. Reservations are not required, but the meetings are subject to change and/or cancellation.
LVN to RN Nursing Requirements
Prerequisites
English 1
Completed at LBCC with a passing grade or successful completion of an approved college English course at the level of English 1 from another college or university.
Sciences
The following courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher before admittance to the program:
- Anatomy 1, Human Anatomy
- Physiology 1, Human Physiology
- Biology 2, General Microbiology
Life Science courses must have a combined GPA of 2.5 or higher and be completed within five (5) years prior to the application deadline. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by LBCC). If you would like to have your courses evaluated, please submit the Life Science Equivalency Form with your application.
Psychology & Sociology
The following courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher before admittance to the program:
- Psychology 1
- Sociology 1
Communications
It is recommended that one of the following courses be completed with a grade of C or higher before admittance to the program. Course completion is required for graduation.
- Communications 10, Public Speaking
- Communications 20, Interpersonal Communications
- Communications 30, Group Communications
Graduation Proficiency Requirements
We do not accept assessment test results from other schools. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree or higher should see a Counselor regarding General Education requirements. For more information, please refer to the graduation proficiency requirements listed in Plan A under the General Education Patterns or speak with a Counselor.
READING
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- A qualifying score achieved through multiple LBCC assessment measures.
- Completion of Read 82 or Read 83 with a grade of C or better at LBCC.
- Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by Admissions & Records.
- A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
MATH
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- A qualifying score on the LBCC Assessment Test which places a student in Math 37, 37H, 40, 45, Statistics 1, 1H, or higher.
- Completion of Math 120, 130, 130A or higher with a grade of C or better at LBCC.
- A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Information Competency
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- Completing a total of two (2) courses: one (1) from the Information category and one (1) from the Technology category.
- A Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Additional Application Requirements
High School Diploma or GED (Mandatory)
All applicants must provide a copy of a high school transcript, diploma or GED certificate. International transcripts must be evaluated by the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.
Overall/Cumulative GPA
Overall or cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or higher and based on grades from all colleges attended. Please attach an unofficial transcript of LBCC courses and an official, sealed transcript from all other colleges.
Classes taken at other colleges must be evaluated and approved for equivalency. Make an appointment with the Counseling Office and give them an official transcript to submit for evaluation.
Information Meeting
Information meetings are mandatory and regularly held during the Fall and Spring semesters. Please refer to the meeting schedule for dates and times. No food, drinks, or children are allowed in the room.
Please note: Meetings are subject to change and cancellations. Remember to Attach a stamped, self-addressed envelope, size 9 1/2” x 4” (available at LBCC Bookstore) to your application.
VN Application Requirements
High School Diploma or GED (Mandatory)
All applicants must provide a copy of a high school transcript, diploma or GED certificate. International transcripts must be evaluated by the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.

Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- A qualifying score on the Math proficiency test that places the student in Math 110.
- Completion of Math 815 or higher with a grade of C or better at LBCC.
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by Admissions & Records LBCC for approval.
READING
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- A qualifying score on the Reading proficiency test. If taken outside of LBCC, it must be taken within a two year period.
- Completion of Reading Development (READ 82) or Reading Improvement (READ 83) with a grade of C or better at LBCC.
- A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by LBCC for approval.
Writing
Satisfying this proficiency may be achieved by any one of the following:
- Qualify for English 1 or completion of English 105.
Life Sciences
One of the following options must be completed with a grade of C or better before admittance to the program:
- Human Biology 1 (BIO 60)
- A combination of Human Anatomy (ANAT 1) and Human Physiology (PHYS 1)
Life Science courses must have a combined GPA of 2.0 or higher and be completed within five (5) years prior to the application deadline. Equivalent courses taken at other colleges must be reviewed by LBCC). If you would like to have your courses evaluated, please submit the Life Science Equivalency Form with your application.
CNA Certificate
Applicants must have a valid Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate from the State of California.
Pharmacology
One of the following options must be completed with a grade of C or better before admittance to the program:
- Pharmacology (ADN 225)
- Pharmacology (VN 225)
Additional Requirements
Applicants must complete the following courses with a grade of C or better before admittance to the program.
- Transition to Nursing (VN 220)
- Mental Health (VN 240) – This can be completed before submitting the application or the student must be enrolled in the course during the first semester of the program.
