LBCC has a rich and tremendous athletic legacy and every year at the end of the athletic seasons, four Long Beach City College student-athletes are honored for their achievements on the playing field, as well as in the classroom. This year’s student-athletes exemplified success both on and off the field. LBCC recognized Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Matthew Pennala from our Men’s Volleyball program. Matt led the men’s volleyball program to the state championship game and plans to attend Cal State Long Beach in the fall to continue his degree. LBCC recognized Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Casey Davis from our Women’s Track & Field program. In Casey Davis was the State Champion in the shot put and in 2023 Casey Davis took sixth place in the state tournament with an 11.64-meter mark. Casey will be accepting a scholarship to compete at Fresno Pacific University in the fall.

LBCC Student-athletes carry a heavy load in the classroom to ensure their matriculation after two years at the community college level to a four-year college or university. LBCC is honored to recognize the outstanding academic achievements of two student-athletes. LBCC recognizes Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Nikola Jancic from our Men’s Water Polo with a 3.91 GPA. Nikola will be transferring to Cal State Long Beach in the fall and will continue to play Water Polo for CSULB. LBCC recognizes Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Sydney Brouwer from our Women’s Water Polo with a 3.94 GPA. Sydney will be transferring to Cal State Fullerton in the fall and will continue to play Water Polo for Cal State Fullerton. Congratulations to these student-athletes and their outstanding achievements.
