Disabled Student Support Services
DSPS Counseling services are available for students during this time of temporary remote instruction we are currently experiencing. Students who require an appointment with a DSP&S counselor are able to schedule an appointment at any time by registering through Cranium Café and making an appointment. Students who do not have access to a desktop, laptop, or other media tablet, are able to engage in an appointment with a DSP&S counselor via phone. Our phone line is answered between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and voice mails left will be checked and responded to regularly. If you have a questions, please feel free to email us at dsps-staff@LBCC.edu and we will respond to you within one business day.
DSP&S is prepared to support DSP&S registered students to ensure accommodations are being met during the transition of moving classes to an online platform.
In anticipation of the transition, DSP&S has created an interactive guide for faculty members on supporting students with disabilities in online courses.
A student interactive guide can be found on the DSP&S website. This interactive guide will walk students through navigating online courses.
For students with any of the following accommodations (below), please be advised:
Zoom-in features are available through various keyboard shortcuts. For students requiring other alternate formats (e.g. Braille, audio), you must submit requests immediately via the DSP&S Student Portal or by contacting Carl Garner at (562) 938-4922 or cgarner@LBCC.edu.
Students approved for Kurzweil will be able to utilize the program remotely through Kurzweil Firefly. Google Docs Voice Typing, Speechnotes, Apple Dictation, and Windows Speech Recognition are all free speech-to-text programs available for use. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Carl Garner.
Interpreting and captioning services will continue to be provided for students approved for this accommodation. ConferZoom training for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) will be held Friday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. If you are unable to attend, please contact Stephanie Bonales directly at (562) 938-4918 or sbonales@LBCC.edu.
For most online teaching modalities that include a written record, such as PowerPoint, Word Docs, and Canvas discussion boards, note-taking may not be necessary. Instructors may post their own lecture notes in lieu. Students approved for notetaking will be able to audio record online instruction, particularly live conference videos. Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and are assigned a notetaker will continue to receive access to course notes through the DSP&S Student Portal. Please reach out to DSP&S immediately if there are any issues with accessing course notes.
DSP&S is working collaboratively with faculty to ensure extended time is met. Faculty interactive guides will discuss how to extend testing time for students with the approved accommodation. The DSP&S testing offices will remain open during the transition to online programming. Limited space will be provided to students who require greater support in regards to testing accommodations.
Online Orientations for New DSP&S Students:
For students who would like to register with DSP&S, orientations will occur online via Canvas. Online orientation is captioned as well as available in American Sign Language (ASL). Interested students are asked to email Mia Vancil (mvancil@LBCC.edu) or Bernadette Gonzalez (bgonzalez@LBCC.edu) regarding their request to complete an online orientation.
