Lifetime Learner Leaves Big Surprise for Nursing
Alan C. Powell and Judith H. Walsh
When Alan C. Powell passed away last year, no one expected the impact he would have on future nursing students at Long Beach City College. The quiet, polite, and always pleasant gentleman would sit at the front of the bus when traveling with the LBCC Lifetime Learning Center on their tours. “He loved our tours,” recalls Theresa Brunella, Director at the center, “He was very polite, and attended many of our excursions. I always recall him wearing his brown leather jacket and reading the newspaper. He would often mention that his wife was a Red Cross nurse, but we had no idea what he had already planned.”
Soon after his passing, the LBCC Foundation Executive Director Paul Kaminski was notified that the Foundation was named in the estate as a beneficiary. Local attorney Richard Williamson, a Long Beach City College alum, contacted Kaminski. “I am very excited that this gift is coming to the Foundation,” says Williamson, “as an alum I know how valuable community colleges are.”
The gift, in excess of $800,000, will establish the Judith H. Walsh Student Nursing Endowment, which will fund nursing scholarships in perpetuity! Dr. Paul J. Creason, Dean of Health Sciences, Kinesiology, and Nursing had this to say, “The Nursing faculty and students are really excited about this donation and endowment. It will provide needed scholarships for our students. I couldn’t be happier”
