For current and prospective LBCC Students who are interested in joining NextUp or Guardian Scholars, here are a few important details for each program.

NextUp Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Need to be an active participant in Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOPS)
  • Be a California resident or eligible for non-resident tuition waiver
  • Qualify to receive the California College Promise Grant
  • Have dependency/wardship established or continued by the court on or after student’s 16th birthday
  • Be younger than 26 years of age at the beginning of the academic year
  • Enrolled in at least 9 units (or less with DSPS verification)
  • Provide a verification letter

Guardian Scholar Student Eligibility Requirements

  • Student has been in foster care at any point in lifetime
  • Must enroll in at least 3 units (unit exception can be requested)
  • Must be under 35 years old at time of acceptance into the program
  • Not a Nextup participant, you can only be in one foster youth program at one time
  • Provide a verification letter

How do I join NextUp or Guardian Scholars?

Please complete our interest form so you can be contacted and provide a verification letter. 

To be eligible to receive FYSS services, we need to verify your status as a current or former foster youth. To do so, you will need to provide us with your Dependency Verification or Ward of the Court Letter.

Obtain your Dependency Verification or Ward of the Court Letter
  • Former Foster Youth students, case is closed, you can obtain these documents by calling the Foster Care Ombudsman Office (for CA cases only) at (877) 846-1602.
  • Current Foster Youth students, case is open, you can obtain these documents by contacting your Social Worker/Case Worker or Probation Officer.
  • If your case is outside of CA or if you need support in obtaining verification documents, please contact our office at fosteryouthservices@lbcc.edu.
