Key positions in the SLO System
The SLO system is comprised of several key positions to help facilitate and implement the initiatives outlined by the committee and the data that is collected.
The Coordinator of General Student Learning Outcomes and the Coordinator of Career Technical Education (CTE) Student Learning Outcomes are responsible for providing leadership and guidance to faculty and staff for the development, content, and application of Student Learning Outcomes at the department, school and college level.
The appointment is a 10-month, 3-year assignment open to all tenured full-time faculty members. The Coordinator of General Student Learning Outcomes assignment receives 40% reassigned time. The Coordinator of CTE Student Learning Outcomes assignment receives 40% reassigned time.
The Coordinators are responsible to the Academic Senate’s Committee on Curriculum and Instruction for the development, content, and application of student learning outcomes in the instructional process. The Coordinators report to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for administrative, fiscal, and personnel matters.
Duties and responsibilities include co-chairing the college-wide Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Committee (ASLO); preparing annual reports that summarize, analyze, and evaluate the past year’s general student learning outcomes assessment activities and accomplishments across the campus, including instructional and non-instructional areas, and use the report to make necessary improvements and adjustments to the assessment effort and to inform reports due to ACCJC as they pertain to outcomes assessment.
The SLO Coordinators work with members of the college community in promoting, developing, and implementing student learning outcomes assessment and related activities such as departmental initiatives and grant development. The Coordinators serve as members of the Committee on Curriculum and Instruction, Department Planning & Program Review Subcommittee, College Planning Committee, Student Success Committee, and a liaison to the Faculty Professional Development Committee.
The SLO Facilitator is the faculty leader for a department and is responsible for managing the SLO assessment process. Facilitators engage with others in a participatory environment. Facilitators should be eager to learn, open to continuous improvement, and willing to help their fellow faculty develop professionally.
The position is highly interpersonal. Facilitators are responsible for leading departmental faculty through the various stages of course and programmatic outcomes assessment. This includes working in concert with the SLO Coordinator, ASLO Subcommittee, and EARA.
The Facilitator acts as a liaison that informs their departments on updates to the outcomes assessment process and ensures that their departments discuss timelines and implementation of various stages of course and programmatic outcomes assessment.
Facilitators will also perform detail-oriented tasks involving various aspects of computer and Internet technologies including TracDat, the LBCC LMS, Google Drive, and YouTube.
The SLO Facilitator position is a one-semester commitment with the possibility for renewal based on an evaluation. Total semester compensation will be $600.00 to $1,000 depending upon Department workload. Payment will be as a stipend. It is to be paid at the end of the semester and is dependent upon meeting Facilitator responsibilities and providing all deliverables.
Educational Assessment Research Analyst (EARA)
Under the direction of the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Student success, consistent with the Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Subcommittee of Curriculum (ASLO), the EARA provides specialized assistance related to the integration of Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) assessment, instructional improvement, institutional evaluation systems, and manages the campus-wide assessment data reporting system (TracDat).
The EARA acts as a resource to faculty in designing and evaluating departmental SLO assessments, including, but not limited to, examining the efficacy of assessment tools, recommending appropriate assessment tools, recommending sampling procedures, developing processes and tools for collecting course and program assessment data from departments, and analyzing and interpreting collected SLO assessment data. The EARA recommends options for assessing institutional outcomes and conducts statistical analyses for faculty to use in determining gaps in student learning and in developing actionable improvement plans.
The EARA will carry out the responsibilities for the following activities:
- Being the Administrator for TracDat: troubleshooting, creating/deleting user accounts, adding new courses or programs/removing inactive ones.
- Running reports for ACCJC, Hiring Priorities, Department Head meetings, etc.
- Analyzing disaggregated data at the course and program level when data is derived from valid/reliable measures of learning.
- Offering training and meetings to explain how to improve methodologies/analysis of data or to teach how to edit in TracDat.
- Assisting with creating methodologies and analyzing data for ILOs/GEOs.
Please note that the EARI does not provide assistance for the following, as these are the responsibilities of departmental faculty and SLO Facilitators:
- Entering any SLO related information into TracDat at the course or program levels (i.e., SLOs, Methods, Results, Actions).
- Collecting, aggregating, and/or analyzing data for departments (except for programs collecting student IDs to disaggregate data).
- Meeting with Departments to discuss SLOs (unless it is to give advice on how to improve methods/results).
