Safe Zone Training Workshop Series
LBCC SafeZone is a multidimensional education program designed to raise awareness and knowledge of LGBTQ+ issues and to promote the visibility and inclusion of LGBTQ+ folx through the implementation of SafeZone training workshop series, LGBTQ affirming campus events and the promotion of campus and community resources to support LGBTQ students, faculty and staff within the Long Beach community.
LBCC SafeZone Learning Outcomes
Through participation in this educational workshop and series of student programs, students will:
- Explain the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
- Define terminology and acquire inclusive language to describe sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
- Describe strategies to support LGBTQ students and to respond to anti-LGBTQ behavior.
- Identify campus and community resources to create a more inclusive and affirming campus environment for LGBTQ students.
Students, faculty and staff who attend 2 of the 3 workshops will receive a SafeZone sticker that can be placed in their office or on personal items. They may also opt-in to being listed as a SafeZone trained LBCC Viking on the LGBTQ webpage.
LGBTQ+ 101 March 28th | T-1200 | 11:00am – 1:00pm
This workshop with address LGBTQ+ identity development, sexual orientation, and the differences between sex and gender.
LGBTQ+ 2.0 April 24th | T-1200 | 12:00pm – 1:00pm
This workshop with more deeply address sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, gender pronouns and inclusive language.
Viking Pride May 9th | T-1100 | 12:00pm – 1:00pm

LGBTQ on Campus training by Kognito
SafeZone participants may also substitute one workshop requirement by completing the online LGBTQ on Campus training by Kognito. You must email your certificate of completion to Sergio Grimaldi at firstname.lastname@example.org for credit toward your SafeZone training.
