Anthropology Department

Anthropology Banner

Anthropology is the study of people all people. But not only are anthropologists as likley to excavate ruins of a past culture as they are to learn from modern people by participating in their lives, they're also as likely to study the music or spiritual practices of a people as they are to study fossils and DNA; anthropologists are interested in every aspect of what it means to be a human.

Traditionally, anthropology is divided up into four sub-fields: Cultural Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, Archaeology, and Linguistic Anthropology. Clink the "courses" link on the left to see descriptions of what classes are available to take. New courses are being added in Fall 2017, including a Physical Anthropology Laboratory and a course in Linguistic Anthropology.

Here at Long Beach City College, it's easy to get involved in the field. We have an Associate Degree for Transfer in Anthropology (link on the left), and several thriving, student-driven clubs (link on the right). If you're curious to learn more now, check out the Links and Downloads page for some interesting articles, information about careers in the field, and news stories about anthropology, ...and please contact any of our faculty if you have any questions.
