COVID-19 Update: Update on Fall Semester, Return to Campus, Commencement, Grading Reminder, and Essential Personnel
Faculty & Staff

Notice

Dear Colleagues,

During these unprecedented times due to our response to COVID-19, there have been several changes made to support student success and minimize the impact of Long Beach City College’s transition to online instruction.

We have also been engaged for some time in discussions pertaining to Fall Semester.  Please know that we understand how important these decisions are and how it impacts everyone – our students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Our decisions, which were made with the guidance of public health officials, took into consideration the health and safety of all as our first priority.  We will do everything possible to support all of you through this continuing and ever-evolving situation.

Updates on Fall Semester and reminders for Spring Semester are below.

Fall Semester Updates

LBCC’s 2020 Fall Semester will be mostly online classes. There will some face-to-face labs in some areas. The Fall Semester schedule will be adjusted. Students should review the revised version prior to planning their schedule for fall. More information will be forthcoming.

Update on Returning to Campus

With this decision regarding Fall Semester, most faculty and staff will not be returning to campus on June 8, 2020. However, there will be some face-to-face instruction and we are currently working on the list of classes that will return to campus for Fall Semester. Those faculty and staff members who are not participating in the face-to-face instruction – you will continue to work remotely and a new date of return will be announced.

Fall 2020 Registration Dates Moved

LBCC acknowledges that there are decisions that students are making regarding their Fall 2020 schedule that depend on the grades earned in this Spring 2020 term.  Due to the new May 27 deadline to make these grading decisions, LBCC has moved Fall 2020 priority registration to June 1-June 12, with open registration beginning Mon., June 15, 2020

Virtual Commencement Ceremony – Fri, June 12, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Long Beach City College’s in-person Commencement Ceremony scheduled for June 4 has been postponed and a virtual ceremony will take place. Long Beach City College’s inaugural Virtual Commencement Ceremony will be on Fri., June 12, 2020 at 5 p.m. You can be part of the celebration by watching the ceremony by visiting www.LBCC.edu. In addition, students who would have participated in the 2020 Commencement Ceremony are invited to join the 2021 in-person Commencement Ceremony. More details about Commencement are forthcoming.

Important Grading Reminder

The following are reminders about the changes in student grading options for this semester:

  1. The choice to withdraw ‘W’ from course(s) up until May 27, 2020
  2. The withdrawal ‘W’ grade will be automatically converted to an excused withdrawal ‘EW’ grade
  3. The choice to change the grading option for any course in the Spring 2020 semester to Pass/No pass up until May 27, 2020
  4. All course attempts in the Spring 2020 semester will not count towards the total 3 attempts allowed to complete a class, regardless of the grade earned

Students with questions should make an appointment with a counselor at www.LBCC.edu/Counseling.

Essential Personnel

As a reminder, LBCC’s Liberal Arts and Pacific Coast Campuses are closed to all but essential personnel. Each area has identified a select number of essential personnel who must continue to report to campus to support critical ongoing operations. These employees are scheduled to be on campus for the least amount of time as possible to ensure social distancing.

Unless an employee is on the Essential Personnel list, their OMNI code will not work.  In the event that someone has an urgent need to access campus and has not been authorized via the weekly Essential Personnel List, they must e-mail their area vice president and cc their immediate supervisor to request access, clearly explaining the emergency.  If the request is approved, the area VP will e-mail Erin Murphy, who will inform LBPD, Facilities, and the Vice President of Business Services.  Please note that this approval process may take 24-48 hours.

Thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding as we experience these changes.
