The goal of the Applied Music program is to prepare students for transfer to a university music program, by completing the requirements for the Music degree at LBCC. The requirements for the degree will provide the academic and audition preparation necessary for a successful transfer. The Applied Music Program (Music 92AD) provides music majors – Classical or Jazz – with private lessons (through audition only, see Auditions page) on a keyboard instrument, voice, guitar, or any standard band (wind ensemble or big band) or orchestra instrument. Each student is required to perform twice per semester before the applied program master class and stand for a jury before the faculty at the end of each semester. Sophomore recitals are reserved for those who reach Sophomore standing in their jury exam, have at least 3 semesters of Music 92AD, and will register for Music 17.
For those intending to declare as Music Majors, the AA degree and ADT degree outline the minimum requirements for a transferring music major. Upon successful entrance to the applied program, you are considered a music major by the department, and are required to complete the following co-requisite course requirements for every semester enrolled in the Applied Program course (Music 92AD, 17A):
- Music Theory Sequence (Music 6, 1A, 1B, 2A) until complete
- Musicianship Sequence (Music 5, 9, 10, 16) until complete
- One large day ensemble: Concert Choir (Music 11AD), Wind Ensemble (Music 46AD), Chamber Orchestra (Music 13AD)
- Three semesters of Class Piano (51A, 51B, 51C; piano majors exempt; AA only – strongly recommended for ADT)
NOTE: Your coursework must be proportional to your semester in applied, i.e., your applied semester cannot be “ahead” of your coursework; it is possible to begin theory and musicianship before joining Applied, but not vice versa.
Theory, Musicianship, and Piano coursework from another college will be evaluated for credit through the regular admissions transcript evaluation. Any additional courses not approved through the transcript review process would need to be challenged through the Credit By Examination (CBE) process, which requires payment of the units, approval by the Department and Dean, and successful completion of the exam.
It is possible to test into a later course in the theory, musicianship, and piano sequences through a placement exam; however, the student must present evidence of why they feel that they can test out of a particular prerequisite, and, due to the degree requirements, must do so through the Credit By Examination process.
