English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language Department at Long Beach City College prepares students to develop the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in order to reach their academic and vocational goals. Our services include placement testing, counseling, registration assistance, and academic instruction. The ESL program seeks to reflect and serve the needs of a growing and changing student population. It provides access to all campus programs and services and prepares students to meet academic, vocational and personal goals.

Certificate of Competency, Reading Skills for ESL Students

Students completing English for Everyday certificate will possess the English language skills necessary for most daily activities. They will have sufficient speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills for a wide variety of occupations such as retail, hospitality, transportation, or manufacturing. (Students must complete a minimum of 234 hours.) 

Program Learning Outcomes 
  • Create grammatically correct sentences at the end of the intermediate- level grammar classes. 
  • Write a focused thesis statement and maintain unity throughout an essay. 
  • Analyze short readings.
