Filipino American History Month Events at LBCC

Providing Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors

The purpose of all Cultural Heritage and History celebrations is to affirm and elevate students by celebrating the diverse tapestry of intersectional identities that make us LBCC. Through these events, we seek to provide students with mirrors in which to see their identity recognized, honored, and valued. They also serve as windows for students of other identities to gain a deeper appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion. And finally, sliding glass doors, inviting everyone in to fully participate.

Over time, several events have become staples for our Cultural Heritage months. All were developed by individual work groups and fostered great reviews. In the spirit of collective impact and institutional change, we have now developed a baseline offering of events coordinated by different areas of the college. These efforts are instrumental in ensuring our students feel engaged, validated, empowered, and inspired- one more way for them to know that they belong at Long Beach City College!

“Reach Out” Film Screening & Talk

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 28th, 5:00–7:00PM
Location: LAC – Social Justice Intercultural Center (B206)

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, join MANA and the Social Justice Intercultural Center for a film screening and talk with the team behind the “Reach Out” short documentary (Director: John Haas and Producers: Menchie Caliboso and Joanne Danganan). “Reach Out” premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific (VC) Film Festival in 2024 and won Best Documentary at the Charlotte Asian Film Festival in 2025.

In an intergenerational collaboration between Los Angeles-based electronica/soul trio Bootleg Orchestra and singer Roger Rigor from iconic Filipino band VST & Co, this short documentary explores the creative process of producing a song that calls for international solidarity for climate justice and highlights the role of music in giving life to a movement. Drawing from personal experiences of environmental injustices and its intimate pairing with the fight for human rights, the artists elaborate on stories behind this song as well as share their creative process of collective songwriting and recording in the studio to create a song to uplift the people. The documentary will conclude with a music video of the full song. The song itself was released in conjunction with the documentary. Food will be provided, will supplies last.
