Borrowing & Renewing
Borrowing privileges and renewing guidelines

Post

All Long Beach City College and California State University Long Beach students, faculty, and staff can check out library materials. Non-students and community members can check out items which are currently in print by putting down a deposit for the item plus a $10, (all refundable), for each item checked out. Another option is to obtain a referral from any Long Beach Public Library. There is a limit of two (2) items per non-Long Beach City College borrower. You need to show a set of identification cards, your public library card, and a valid photo identification to check out any materials.

Your current student identification card is also your library card. Make sure you have a current semester student-services sticker affixed to the back of the card to show current proof of enrollment. If you do not have one, we will also accept a printout of your classes plus your driver’s license or California identification card.

Faculty Borrowing & Renewing

Books generally circulate to faculty for 120 days; faculty loans are subject to recall when there are other requests for the materials. Check LBCC Library Database and view My Record to determine what materials you have checked out. The Long Beach City College Libraries have a reciprocal borrowing agreement with the University Library at California State University Long Beach enabling eligible students, faculty, staff, and administrators to use both library systems. Please visit read the CSULB Mutual Use and Lending Agreements for details and the established guidelines.

Checking out current textbooks

Current textbooks are housed in our Reserve Collection. These books, used in classes, are left with the Library by the instructors for their students. If a current textbook you need is not in our Reserve Collection, please talk to your instructor about placing a copy on reserve.

Returning Library Materials

Books and periodicals checked out at either campus can be returned at either library. Music CDs, CD-ROMs, videos, college catalogs, and reserve items are returned to the Library where they were initially checked out. Items checked out at California State University Long Beach connected to the reciprocal-borrowing privilege must be returned at that institution.

Renewing library materials

Only books are renewable. You can renew items in by phone, and in person. To renew by phone, call (562) 938-4231 for the LAC Circulation Desk or (562) 938-3029 for the PCC Circulation Desk. In addition, you can also stop by the Circulation Desk anytime during the open hours to renew materials. Items do not need to be present to renew in person.

Using your LBCC Student ID card

You can use your card to check out materials at the LAC Library, PCC Library, and California State University Long Beach Library. Long Beach City College Library has a reciprocal agreement with the California State University Long Beach Library that allows borrowers to check out books and media. Reserve items, bound periodicals, remote access to electronic resources, and the library computer labs are not available to reciprocal Long Beach City College borrowers. Interlibrary Loan, borrowing items outside of our library system, is available to Long Beach City College students, faculty and staff for items not in our collection.
