Vocal Ensembles

Viking Chorale (MUSIC 11AD)

SATB Classical Concert Choir that meets once a week and performs two concerts a semester. All periods and styles of classical literature are performed. This group will perform a major work every semester with a full orchestra. Music majors, as well as non-majors, participate in this choir.

Viking Singers (MUSIC 12AD)

SATB Classical Concert Choir that performs four concerts a semester. All periods and styles of classical and contemporary chamber literature are performed. Required course for vocal majors, but open to all students.

Jazz Choir (MUSIC 23AD)

Known as “Evening Vocal Jazz,” this vocal jazz ensemble is open to the community, music majors, and non-majors alike. Performs large-group vocal jazz repertoire with no audition required. Regularly shares the stage with the entirety of the LBCC choral program both on and off campus for our community, friends, and family.

Vocal Jazz Ensembles (MUSIC 24AD)

Known as “The Lyrical Workers,” this audition-only, vocal jazz ensemble performs vocal jazz repertoire from all eras at concerts on campus as well as at festivals, community functions, conferences, and with occasional special guests. Full scholarships from the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation are awarded to one music-major member of this ensemble per year.

Madrigal A Cappella Choir  (MUSIC 41AD)

Caroling choir performing traditional holiday arrangements. Numerous performances for both on and off campus events in Dickens-era costumes. Open to all singers. Students will be scheduled to perform in quartets and octets.

Instrumental Ensembles

College Symphony Orchestra (MUSIC 13AD)

Performs major orchestral works from all historical periods twice a semester. Required course for string players in the applied music program. Previous orchestral experience required. For wind and percussion students, there may be an audition if sections are full.

Chamber Orchestra (MUSIC 15AD)

This course serves as a study and performance of the string orchestra repertoire. Prior string ensemble performance recommended. Both music majors and non-music majors make up the ensemble. The chamber orchestra performs 1-2 times per semester.

Jazz Combos (MUSIC 57AD)

Jazz small groups (trios, quartets, etc.) with coached rehearsal times. Combos perform multiple times each semester for coffeehouse gigs, jam sessions, school functions, and private events. Jazz musicians of all levels are welcome to join.

Percussion Ensemble (MUSIC 28AD)

Percussion Ensemble is dedicated to the performance of percussion repertoire from all periods and styles of percussion music. Skills and techniques for playing various percussion instruments. One concert per semester. The percussion ensemble is open to all levels (including beginners) and is for both music majors and non-music majors.

Wind Ensemble (MUSIC 38AD)

Studies and performs both traditional and contemporary wind music. Consists of both music majors and non-music majors. Guest artists and conductors often work with this group. Performs at least twice a semester, along with traveling on its annual tour. Required course for all wind and percussion majors who are part of the applied music program.

Viking Show Band (MUSIC 49AD)

The Viking Show Band and Rock Band perform at home football and basketball games, other local events, including the annual “Band Spectacular.” Primarily “popular” repertoire from the 40’s to the present. Both music majors and non-majors. 

Jazz Big Band (MUSIC 57AD)

Jazz band with traditional swing instrumentation. Performs big band literature from a wide variety of styles and eras at an end of semester concert with a guest artist. Music majors and non-majors are welcome to join. There may be an audition if sections are full.

Beach City Symphonic Band (non-credit ensemble)

Community band that includes college students, community members, as well as high school students. The band is part of the Life-Long Learning Center at Long Beach City College. The Band performs once per semester.
