Library Technician

The Library Technician Program is designed to teach the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for today’s Library Technicians. The Associate of Arts Degree and Certificate of Achievement program are designed to successfully prepare students for employment with entry and mid-level library technician positions in public, academic, school, special libraries, and other information-related industries. 

This program, designed according to guidelines from the American Library Association, is intended to equip students with the required competencies for successful performance in all phases of library services. It encompasses library automation essentials such as acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, public access catalogs, information retrieval, and the Internet.

Career Opportunities

This field of concentration is designed to prepare students for an entry-level Library Technician Position in public, academic, school, special libraries, and other information-related industries.

Associate in Arts (AA), Library Technician

The Long Beach City College Library Technician Associate of Arts Degree is designed to teach the fundamentals of knowledge and skills needed for today’s Library Technicians. Students can earn this degree by completing the 18 units of required Library Technician courses, in addition to completing the 42 general requirement and electives units that LBCC offers. The degree is designed to successfully prepare students for employment with entry and mid-level library technician positions in public, academic, school, special libraries, and other information-related industries. It encompasses library automation essentials such as acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, public access catalogs, techniques of information retrieval, and the Internet. 

Program Learning Outcomes: 
  • Students will synthesize the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills for all major components of a working library. 
  • Examine and compare information from various sources to evaluate reliability, validity, accuracy, authority, timeliness, and point of view or bias. 
  • Identify and internalize library standards, principles, organization, theoretical knowledge, and practices. 
  • Demonstrate, via hands-on exercises and activities, the skills required to work and perform at a library technician level.
