LGBTQIA+ Faculty Resources

Rainbow Pride Flag

Long Beach City College provides support and care to our LGBTQ+ students. We value your experiences and individual identity and will work with students to provide affirming, respectful and inclusive instruction in our classrooms including connecting them with support and resources. And we welcome feedback from students throughout the semester to improve the effectiveness of our teaching practices.

We honor the asserted names and pronouns of all our students. Please let us know as early as possible through Name Coach or via email what your preferred name is so we are addressing you according to your proper identity.

Preferred Names, Personal Pronouns & Name Coach

Name Coach

Did you know that your students are able to enter their pronouns, as well as the pronunciation of their name, to Canvas through Name Coach? Please direct students to this link for more information on the process

Many institutions are starting to use Name Coach to ensure students are properly identified in class. For more information on how to use Name Coach to learn students’ names and pronouns, we suggest watching this helpful video that Yale University created for its faculty.

Personal Pronoun Guide

For more information on personal pronouns and links to further educational resources, please view the Personal Pronoun Guide created by Student Equity

Preferred Names

Because Long Beach City College seeks to provide an inclusive and non-discriminatory environment, LBCC students, including transgender and gender non-conforming students, may opt to identify themselves with a preferred name that is different from their legal first name. Please direct students to the section on Preferred Names for more information about how to set up their preferred names.
