The benefits of learning another language are endless. In addition to gaining marketable skills and insight into other cultures, those who learn other languages improve their analytical skills, communicate better in any given situation and develop a deeper understanding of effective ways of communication.
The Foreign Languages Department offers Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese. All courses stress listening, speaking, reading and writing and foster a cultural understanding of the regions where the language is spoken. Additionally, the department offers Khmer for heritage speakers.
Linguistics – the study of the sound, structure, and development of language – teaches students how language works and evolves. They also learn the differences and relationships among languages.
The department offers associate degrees and certificates of achievement. Proficiency in another language lays the groundwork for fluency, opening doors to further educational and professional opportunities in a multicultural world. Likewise, linguistics can lead to careers in teaching, publishing, security, international relations, research, medicine, and technology.
