New Student Checklist

NEW STUDENT STEPS

STEP 1: Apply to Long Beach City College

Complete the free online college application to apply for admission at LBCC. You may apply for the Summer/Fall or Winter/Spring terms. Be prepared with the following information before starting the application:

  • Personal Email Address
  • For U.S Citizens/Permanent Residents: Social Security or Alien Registration
  • For Undocumented/Dreamer Students: No required documents
  • Knowledge of highest-level Math & English course & grade completed
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu, click on “Quicklinks,” & select “Apply Now.”
  2. if you’ve never attended a CA Community College, click “Create an Account”. Enter an email address or phone #. You will receive a 6-digit security code. *If you’ve done dual enrollment, use your login credentials.*
  3. If you already have an account, click ”Sign In”. If you can’t access your account, click on “Forgot Password” and complete the necessary steps.
  4. If you are creating an account, enter your personal information in Steps 1-3 to create a profile.
  1. Skip the ID.me page by clicking “Verify Later” and “Yes, I want to opt out of ID.me”
  2. Click “Start a New Application”
  3. Important Section Information: Under Education Section, select “First Time College Student.” This includes dual enrollment students. Under Residency Section, if DACA eligible, DO NOT enter your SSN OR TPIN. Check off “No Documents”
  4. Complete all sections of the application. Click “Continue” as you go.
  5. Click “Review My Applications” to review your responses.
  6. Check consent boxes to submit application.

CONGRATS! You are now a Viking! Within 24-72 hours, your 7-digit Viking ID number will be sent to you via email. Be sure to save both your CCC ID# and Viking ID#.

STEP 2: Apply for Financial Aid

To receive financial support, we recommend that you apply for Financial Aid.

To ensure LBCC receives your financial aid application, make sure to list LBCC as one of your schools, our code is 001219. After submitting either application, check your email for confirmation of completion. Log into your Viking Student System and Financial Aid account to verify submission. If you need assistance, please visit LBCC’s Financial Aid.

STEP 3: Create Your Viking Student Login

Once you’ve applied to Long Beach City College and have received your 7-digit Viking ID number, you can create your Viking Student Portal and password.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner.
  2. Click on “New/Forgotten Password” to begin creating your portal.
  3. Insert your Viking ID Number (7-digit number that begins with 0 or 1).
  4. A “One Time Passcode” will be sent to you via email or text. Insert code once received and click “Continue.” (If you have issues receiving your OTP, you can always request a code using another delivery method, including contacting the Student Technology Help Desk at 562-938-4250).
  5. Create your Viking Student Portal password and be sure to follow the password requirements.

You did it! You can now login with your Viking ID # and password to access your student portal.

STEP 4: Complete the LBCC Online Orientation

Completing the Online Orientation is a requirement to register for classes. The orientation must be completed via computer (desktop or laptop) and is only compatible with Chrome or Firefox. You will only need to complete the orientation once while at LBCC. At any time you can save and continue another time.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Student Service” box.
  4. Click on “My Orientations” & select “New Student Orientation”
  5. Complete all sections of the orientation. Students must pass the final quiz with 80% or more to earn credit. Within 24 hours of completing the final quiz, your orientation task will be marked complete.

STEP 5: Complete Participation Agreement for Long Beach College Promise or Viking Advantage

Once you’ve applied to LBCC and created your Viking Student Portal, you will need to complete the online participation agreement for Long Beach College Promise or Viking Advantage. This is required for you to receive priority registration, free tuition, & a transfer pathway.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Student Service” box
  4. Click “My Participation Agreements”
  5. Select one of the following: “LBCP Agreement” or “Viking Advantage Agreement”
  6. Review & submit the agreement.

STEP 6: Complete the Guided Placement Tool

Students are required to complete the online Guided Placement Tool. This is a course placement survey to help counselors know what English, Math, and ESL sequence you place into at the college level. If you submitted your placements on the LBCC application, you will not be assigned the Guided Placement Tool.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Student Service” box
  4. Click “My Participation Agreements”
  5. Click on “Guided Placement Tool” & respond to all the questions.
  6. Your placement results will be available under “My Placement Results” within 24-hours.

STEP 7: Meet with a Counselor

LBCC counselors offer a range of services, including: Academic Counseling, Career Exploration, Educational Planning, College Transfer, etc. There will be varying availability that is subject to change. If you do not see any available appointments, please check back the next day.

  1. Visit LBCC Make a Counseling Appointment.
  2. Select the option that best fits your needs and schedule your appointment via ConexED.

STEP 8: Register for Classes

Now that you’ve met with a counselor and completed your Ed Plan (Degree Planner), you can register for classes during your registration date & time. The earlier you register for classes, the more available classes you will find.

Note: New course numbering for select courses is being implemented at LBCC beginning Fall 2025. Visit the Common Course Numbering page for more information.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule” box
  4. Click “Build Schedule” & then “Class Search and Enroll”
  5. Select Term (ex. Fall 2026)
  6. Enter course SUBJECT & NUMBER from your Ed Plan (ex. COUNS 48)
  7. Review course options including days, times, and location
  8. Click on the desired course
  9. Go through a 4-Step confirmation process
  10. Continue by selecting “Accept.” If applicable, enter your class Permission # (given by professor).
  11. On step 3 of 4, select “Enroll” and click “Next”
  12. Confirm Enrollment.

STEP 9: Pay your Student Fees

After completing the online registration, students can pay for their student fees through their Viking Student Portal. Students are required to pay for their account balance prior to the due date to avoid being dropped from classes. Students can also pay for student fees in-person at the Cashier’s Office: LAC (A-1081) or TTC (GG-101).

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Student Account” box.
  4. Click “Make a Payment” & click “Continue to Nelnet.”
  5. You can select “Make a Payment” or “Set up a Payment Plan.”

STEP 10: Purchase Course Textbooks

The LBCC Bookstore sells and rents new and used textbooks for students to utilize during the semester for their registered courses.

  1. Visit LBCC Bookstore.
  2. Click the tab “Course Materials & Textbooks” & select “Find Course Materials.”
  3. Choose your campus. Enter the course term, dept, number, & section.
  4. Select if you would like to rent or buy the textbooks.
  5. Click “Proceed to Checkout.”
  6. Select how you would like to receive the order.
  7. Enter payment method (ex. Debit/Credit, Financial Aid, etc.)

How to View your Educational Plan (Degree Planner)

An Education Plan (also known as Degree Planner) outlines the courses you should take in order to reach your educational goal. If you created an Educational Plan with a counselor, you may view it online in your Viking Student System. If needed, meet with a counselor to update/change your Ed Plan.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule”
  4. Click “Build Schedule” & then select “My Ed Plan (Degree Planner)”
  5. You will be redirected to a page titled “Welcome to Degree Planner.” Read the overview & click “Continue”
  6. Review your courses by semester

How to View your Registration Appointment

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule”
  4. On the bottom of the main page, you can find the date & time under the subtitle “Registration Appointments for Current Students”

How to Add a Class with an Add Code/Permission Number

Students who are on the waitlist for a class or are trying to add a class after the semester has begun, may need to use an add code/permission number.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule”
  4. Click “Build Schedule” & then “Add By Class Number.” Select Term (ex. Fall 2026) & enter your 5-digit class number
  5. Click on “Shopping Cart” & select “Change Preferences”
  6. Enter your permission number given by a professor. Click save & enroll.

How to View your Course Schedule

After completing the online course registration, students can view their course schedule for the semester in their Viking Student System. Be sure to review the Enrollment Deadlines to be aware of any important dates.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule”
  4. Click “View Schedule”
  5. Click “Weekly Schedule” to view your schedule as a visual format.
  6. Click “View Classes” to see your enrolled, waitlisted, and dropped classes. Students can also see the unit count of their courses under “Units”

How to Access your Courses on Canvas

After completing the online course registration, students can access their course shelf 48-72 hours before the start of the semester. Professors are responsible for launching their Canvas course. Any questions can be directed to them.

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on the tab titled “Canvas.”
  4. When your course has been published, accept the course invitation. All your classes can be found on the “Dashboard” tile.

How to Drop a Class from your Schedule

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click on “Registration & Schedule.”
  4. Click “Update Schedule” & then select “Drop Class.”
  5. Select the course/es you want to drop & click “Next.”
  6. Click the blue button “Drop Classes” & confirm that you would like to be dropped from the course.

How to Update Your Contact Information

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Student Account” box
  4. Click ”Update Profile Information” & select “Contact Details”
  5. EMAIL: Click on the existing email, erase it, and replace it with the new one. Click “Preferred” and select “Save”. (NOTE: Avoid using your LBCC student email to easily obtain OTPs for the Viking Portal)
  6. PHONE: Click on the existing phone #, erase it, and replace it with the new one. Click “Preferred” and select “Save”. (NOTE: Only enter numbers, do NOT include special characters (ex. parentheses or dashes)

How to Retrieve Student Transcripts 

Requesting Unofficial Transcripts:

  1. Go to www.lbcc.edu and click on “Viking Portal” on the top left corner
  2. Enter your LBCC Viking ID number & Password. On your dashboard, click “Viking Student System”
  3. Click the “Academic Records” box
  4. Click “View Unofficial Transcript” & in the Report Type drop down select “Unofficial Transcript”. Click “Submit”
  5. Click the date of your report and select “View Report”. A PDF of your Unofficial Transcripts will generate. (NOTE: Make sure the internet pop blocker is disabled)

Requesting Official Transcripts: 

  1. Visit LBCC’s Request Transcripts Online page and click “Parchment Transcript Services”
  2. Enter your email address & create an account to continue. A Verification Code will be sent to your
    email to confirm your information.
  3. You will be asked to enter your Enrollment Information.
  4. Once your account is created, click “Order Your Transcript” and select a delivery method.
