The History Department offers an Associate in Arts in History for Transfer Degree which provides students with a fundamental knowledge of historical events, literacy, and thinking. Upon completion of the degree, students will also gain the knowledge, skills, civic engagement abilities and cultural sensitivity that will allow them to be successful as citizens in a multicultural society. Furthermore, this degree supplies students with a basic understanding of what it means to be a historian. Students completing the degree will gain the necessary skills needed to succeed after transfer to a California State University Campus (CSU) or any other 4-year college.

Students who study History develop and hone many skills valued across a variety of industries. A History degree equips students with the ability to conduct original research, identify and evaluate evidence, and differentiate between cause and effect. History students also learn how to use written and oral communication to convey complex ideas clearly and succinctly. More than this, studying History cultivates an appreciation for diversity across regions and cultures, better preparing students to thrive professionally in an increasingly globalized world.

What does “studying history” at the college level mean?
Studying history at a place like LBCC is about much more than memorizing names, places, and dates. To become a historian, one must learn how to collect evidence about the past and evaluate its reliability. Historians not only examine evidence to draw conclusions about what actually happened, but also about the causes and larger significance of historical events. Even when historians agree about the basic facts related to an issue, they often disagree with each other about their causes and/or significance. These debates can have important consequences by informing policymakers, journalists, and teachers.
Where do LBCC students in History transfer?
LBCC History majors have transferred to a wide variety of four-year institutions, including (but not limited to): Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Los Angeles, Sarah Lawrence College (NY), UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Minnesota.
Does the LBCC History Program offer any internships or work experience opportunities for students?
LBCC History majors often work as Supplemental Instructors or Embedded Tutors for courses they have already successfully completed. Responsibilities for those hired into these positions can include holding weekly meetings where students review key concepts and work on study strategies, providing one-on-one tutoring and mentorship, and assisting the primary instructor with in-class activities.
Some local historic sites, such as Rancho los Alamitos and Rancho los Cerritos, also offer internship opportunities for college students.
What student activities or clubs are offered by the LBCC History program?
The LBCC History Club brings the subject of history to life by organizing historical talks, museum visits, movie nights, and travel opportunities. It also organizes visits to History departments at local four-year universities, helps students get transfer advice, and connects History majors with LBCC History faculty for one-on-one mentoring. The History Club also holds transfer events with local universities such as Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine.
Many LBCC History Instructors also organize field trips to supplement in-class instruction. These trips have included visits to the Bowers Museum, Getty Museum, the Richard Nixon Library, and many others.
Faculty in the History program also advises the LBCC Feminist Club, an inclusive and intersectional, student-centered space to engage in the big questions around us today. The club provides a space to talk and process our thoughts, but also get involved in our communities and beyond.
