Applying for Financial Aid
Submit Your FAFSA Application
No matter what kind of financial aid you are applying for, your first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application. The FAFSA isn’t a type of financial aid, but rather, it is the application that allows a student to receive the California College Promise Grant, federal and state grants, work-study, direct loans, and in some cases, college scholarships.
The FAFSA is available every year on October 1. This gives you the opportunity to complete the forms earlier and get a better idea of what your financial aid package will look like. The application will only require answers for questions that apply to you based on your economic situation. You will only need to complete one FAFSA application for each academic year you are in school.
When you file your FAFSA online, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) listing all of the information you submitted within 5 days. At that time, a copy of your SAR will be automatically sent to the state grant agency and all of the colleges you listed on your FAFSA. Once LBCC receives your SAR, we will let you know if additional information is needed to process your application. When your file is complete, the Financial Aid Office will notify you of how much federal aid you qualify for.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
- You must have graduated from high school, have a General Education Diploma (GED), or completed homeschooling before you can receive financial aid.
- You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. This does not include AB540 students or those on student visas.
- You must be registered with the US Selective Service (if required).
- Be working towards a degree, certificate, or eligible educational goal (such as transfer to a four-year college or university).
- You must not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal educational loan.
- You must not have been convicted or drug possession or sales in the recent past (see the FAFSA website for more information).
- If you have a Bachelor’s Degree from a US or foreign school, you are eligible for loans, but not grants.
Preparing to Apply
- You will need the appropriate school code to complete the FAFSA. The school code for Long Beach City College is 001219.
- You will need your Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) to sign the FAFSA for the fastest possible processing. If you do not have or need a new one, you may create one by visiting the FSA ID website.
- Based on the answers to certain questions, you may need to include information from your parents, including their tax returns, income records, Social Security benefits, or W-2 forms.
- You will need records of checking & savings accounts and any investments.
- You will need the Social Security number(s) and birthdates of yourself and your parents.
- You will need a Driver’s License or state-issued ID number.
Be sure to keep a copy of your records in case the Financial Aid Office needs to verify your application.
How to Apply
Step 1 – Submit your application
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. The school code for LBCC is 001219.
Tip: The application process begins October 1 foR the next school year beginning in the fall. LBCC gives priority consideration for federal programs to early applicants. March 2 is usually the deadline for the state Cal Grant program.
Step 2 – Review your Student aid report (SAR)
Within a week you will receive an email with your Student Aid Report (SAR) or by US Mail if you didn’t include an email address on the FAFSA. This confirms that your application has been processed and gives you basic information about your eligibility. All the schools listed on your FAFSA will be sent the same report.
Step 3 – LBCC will contact you about the required Information
The Financial Aid Office will notify you that your application has been received. If there is additional information needed to complete your application, you will receive additional notifications on how to download any required forms and upload the required information.
Tip: If available, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) at the FAFSA web site. If you (or your parents if required) file a tax return later, return to the FAFSA web site and use the DRT to make corrections.
Step 4 - Review of Application
Your file will be reviewed by a Financial Aid Counselor for accuracy (verification) or to consider a Petition or other forms you have submitted.
Tip: We have countless files to process every year and review them in the order in which they are received, therefore it is important that you respond promptly to requests for information. If you receive your SAR and do not receive a letter from us in 2 weeks, check your LBCC Self Service account for notification.
Step 5 – Review your award letter
LBCC will send you an Award Letter to notify you what award(s) you qualify for and the amount.
Tip: Read your Award Letter carefully. It includes terms & conditions and important details about your award.
Step 6 – Look for your first financial aid disbursement
During the first week of classes, your financial aid payments will be distributed. Disbursements will be scheduled throughout the semester for those who applied late. Long Beach City College has partnered with BankMobile to deliver your financial aid refund. For more information about BankMobile, visit this link: https://bankmobiledisbursements.com/refundchoices/. You will use BankMobile to access your financial aid as long as you are at LBCC. There are Allpoint ATMs on both the LAC and PCC campuses.
